Selling your soul for pageviews

In reddit's latest PR BS blog entry they brag "In December 2011, reddit served 2.07 billion pageviews. Crazy."

They pose the question "In less than a year, reddit traffic has more than doubled. How did this happen?"

Good question. Let's take a look. Alexa.com shows the popular search terms for reddit. They include "teen girls", "beastiality", "incest", "upskirt", "ass", "nsfw", and "jailbait".

It "happened" because there are so many perverts on the internet and reddit has no conscience. Reddit has worked its way up to become the fourth most popular porn site in the world, just behind xhamster.com, pornhub.com and YouPorn.com.

The distortion continues, "So how do we account for the growth?  Like all things reddit, the credit goes to our community".

Ah, "community".  Only on a site as unscrupulous as reddit would millions of perverts googling "incest" and "teen girls" be considered a "community".

Only a site as fraudulent as reddit would give "credit" to grown men for seeking out beastiality and underage rape pornography.

It "happened" because reddit is run by fundamentally bad people who care more about pageviews than being decent human beings. It happened because reddit has no qualms about hosting forums for beating and raping women as long as it increases their pageviews.

They know exactly how it "happened". It's not "crazy" or surprising in any way. Their very strategy was to make money by filling the world with the worst imaginable smut, without regard to the adverse impact that will have on women, children, rape victims, and the world in general.

That was their goal.  They succeeded.  Congratulations.  I hope they enjoy bragging about their pageviews in Hell.

It is really creepy that so many people found Reddit by searching on "beastiality" and "incest". That is so sick.

i was looking for your downvote arrow, but since i couldnt find it i decided to comment instead. i think you are maybe a bit confused on why reddit allows forums to discuss taboo topics. reddit IS a speech site, and free speech is something worth cherishing, believe it or not even more so than page views. i personally like the idea of a community where nothing is taboo, and users can go to talk about what ever they want without fear of persecution, even if that topic is beating women. no one is saying reddit is sanctioning 'beating women tournaments' or 'dog raping festivals' but the idea that people can freely exchange thoughts on these topics should be held in very high regard. illegal is illegal, and i dont support the idea of breaking (most)laws, but it shouldnt be considered some sort of sin to talk about it. i wonder, if this site is so bad why are you so salty that youre not a part of it?. Community usually refers to a social unit larger than a household that shares common values and has social cohesion, so yeah, its a community. also, you conveniently left out all the good things reddit does such as secret santa, arbitrary day, random acts of pizza, play it forward, and many many instances of redditors helping one another with food, shelter, and even money for bills. this is a community. a damn good one that really shows me a lot of what humanity has to offer, and for that i am grateful. so when your done with your pro SOPA rally and bible study, feel free to swing on over to r/fitness or r/askscience and soak in some knowledge. hell, if youre not busy hit r/funny for a laugh, sounds like you could use it.
-Love always and forever,
Johnny_Dangerously, your friendly neighborhood redditor.

p.s. i dont use much punctuation, or really any proper formatting and im not a writer, so just let it go.

Yeah, I could let it go. Or you could have enough self respect to express yourself at a level higher than a third grader.

> no one is saying reddit is sanctioning 'beating women tournaments'

Have you seen http://www.reddit.com/r/BeatingWomen? Spend 5 minutes there. It is horrifying.

Today there is a picture of a man using a woman's mouth as an ashtray. There is a diagram entitled "Where to beat a c*nt and make it count". There is a video of a man slapping a woman in the face. The background is a drawing of a man on top of a woman, punching her as she bleeds.

One moderator labels himself "The rapist", another "The Woman Killer".

At the bottom of the page is an image of a man's hand with a reddit alien tattoo above women who are bruised and bloodied.

That is decidedly NOT "something worth cherishing" nor "a damn good community".

You should be ashamed of yourself for justifying that as "free speech". It should be shut down, and those people should certainly not be given special permission to steal copyrighted material.

> Community usually refers to a social unit larger than a household that shares common values and has social cohesion, so yeah, its a community.

Reddit is a community only in the same sense that rapists are members of a community.

Hey Lou, love the site. When do you think Reddit will finally fold? Also, what do you think of the forthcoming "reddit blackout"?

> Hey Lou, love the site.

Thanks. People appreciate authenticity these days. There is so little of it in society today. People know that reddit is a sewer and that their policies are patently unfair, but most people don't have the courage to speak out. I get a lot of emails complimenting me for doing so.

I got a lot of positive comments about my take on Alexis' catchphrase "To make the world suck less... by filling it with underage rape pornography". It is so true. The hypocrisy so extreme and ridiculous that it becomes funny.

Glad you like the site.

Lou, thanks for doing this, your blog is an important viewpoint. Is there really a benefit to reddit's success, when they have so much bad stuff on the site? Disturbed, depraved folks who like r/beatingwomen. And the kiddie porn enthusiasts who just made 100 new jailbait subreddits after the big one was shut down. Probably guarantees that no investor in their right mind will buy the site with that kind of stuff. Gay atheist liberal aspergers hipster losers who drown out other viewpoints, I don't need that bullshit.

I didn't watch the whole thing, but in general, I support SOPA and PIPA.

Reddit needs to police their own site. They can't just openly profit on other people's copyrighted works.

SOPA has lost, but will come back with another name. Sooner or later the reddits of the world are going to have to take responsibility for their own site.
